Saddened by the thought of our 2016 season in the sun coming to an official end this September 22? Milk summer for every last ray of sunshine. You’ve got less than 30 days to give these activities a try before a long cycle of dark, cold, wet days follow. Oh joy!
Spend a day on the water
No summer is complete without a day on the water and BC residents have countless options. Here are a few suggestions should you need inspiration.
Inflatables: Get your summer vibe on with an adult floaty. From single inner tubes, to party islands, trampolines and Sea-Doos, the more the merrier when it comes to enjoying a day on an inflatable.
Rent a watercraft:
Nothing says summer like a day on the water with friends. If you are not fortunate enough to have a friend with a motorized boat, rent one. Starting at $40 an hour, anyone can rent a boat. Granville Island has a number of rental companies on the dock.
Sleep Outdoors
Summer isn’t complete until you’ve spent one night in a tent. Nothing compares to the experience of setting up camp and falling asleep to the sounds of nature. Glamping is cheating as is pitching a tent in your own backyard. Don’t forget a good pad or air mattress, flashlight, tarp and a few layers for late night chills. Tip of the day: always relieve yourself before you retire because nothing is worse than having to get up in the middle of the night. Don’t forget a guitar and a propane fire pit when there’s a fire ban. The memories are worth every rugged minute of it.
Practice Yoga outdoors
Summer is the only time of year when you can pick and choose from a variety of FREE outdoor yoga classes around the city. From lululemon’s annual Nooner yoga series to Yyoga on Grouse Mountain and yoga On The Pier, this is the time of year to try it. The free and easy feeling of taking part in a community practice like outdoor yoga is sheer bliss. Drop your mat anywhere in the sun before summer comes to an end even if you did miss one of these epic outdoor classes. Namaste
Enjoy après outdoors
Whether it’s hosting an epic post trail-running BBQ or hitting up your favourite city patio (try the new Glowbal birdcages), après summer fun is meant to be spent with friends on a patio. Put in a full day of play in the sun and then celebrate urban slopestyle. Après is everyday!
Swim in a lake
Nothing screams summer like a swim in a lake. From Harrison to Allouette, Brohm Lake and beyond, pick a lake and commit to taking a dip that includes going under water. No lily dipping allowed. The Swim Guide is an excellent resource for checking the status of swimmable bodies of water. Visit https://www.theswimguide.org
If you’re curious about which season is your best match, I love this online test. If you’re a summer lover like me, get out there and enjoy the smells of summer because they soon shall pass. Bug spray, suntan lotion, sweaty, sandy skin are just a few of my favourites. Which season are you? The summer of 2016 is winding down so use this list and go play outdoors.
