Everyday is après at Cornucopia!

The adventure to Whistler began in a Lincoln MKZ hybrid. There just isn’t any other way to travel the Sea to Sky than in style and that is just what we did. Whistler Blackcomb Mountain declared an early opening day on November 22, which is why it’s no surprise that even the locals welcome  Cornucopia Wine and Food Festival every year with open arms and open pocket books. Cornucopia offers guests a golden pre-season opportunity  to warm up their après-outdoor muscles during this 10 day booze and culinary adventure. Wrapping just days before Whistler opens for business,  here are the top reasons why Cornucopia is worth the calorie and liver sacrifice. For 17 years now Cornucopia has been evolving. Whatever preconceived notions you may have about Whistler’s annual wine and food  celebration, forget them.  Generalizations like being expensive or pretentious are not at all close to the reality of this festival and everything it has t  to offer. Depending on your budget, Cornucopia offers almost too many options. Fun and... ...

Size does matter: The search for the best nachos in Whistler!

After a day conquering fresh terrain and unturned tracks on Whistler Blackcomb, you and your ski peeps are hungry like the wolf and more than deserving of a mother munch down. The one and only singular menu item that your group can divide and conquer together is nachos. Sharing your stories over a tower of nachos is part of the après fun.Follow me on my own nacho taste tour to find the raddest nachos in Whistler.  Factors like size, cheese layers, toppings and price all contribute to deciding which establishment has the best nachos. Whistler has a slew of pubs, bars and restaurants that cater to the nacho fanatic (see a full list below).  These are my findings based on four of Tourism Whistler’s top picks. Stops included the Longhorn Saloon, Merlin’s, The Mexican Corner and The Mallard Lounge. The Fiesta:When you are craving an authentic après ski fiesta complete with happy Spanish speaking people, margaritas and mucho carne, be sure to head straight to The Mexican Corner in Mountain Square.  The... ...

Day 5: Shred Shames Mountain Nothing quite gets you out of bed on the first day of a new year than a free lift ticket, and Terrace’s Shames Mountain according to Powder Magazine is well worth the effort. “Shames receives 475 inches of annual snowfall, laying claim to one of the deepest, most consistent snow packs in North America and its backcountry access is unrivalled.”    The drive from downtown Terrace is a... ...

Death Wish or Dream? “McConkey” Review

Red Bull Media House and Matchstick Productions feed the Vancouver crowd with taurine and unveil a mind-blowing documentary on real-life Superman Shane McConkey.  No spoiler alert here. We already know how the story ends, but how are the film makers are going to get us there? DO watch it on the big screen and have Kleenex on hand.  Pay attention to the constant foreshadowing as the story unfolds. They don’t make epic ski movies like this ever… unless of course you are Red Bull. Making ski pizzas at the ripe age of two, it was clear that McConkey got his genes from his Dad, a ski star living his passion for the sport and the outdoors, even at the cost of losing his wife and child prodigy. Interviews with old friends, roommates from Burke Mountain Academy and college days in Boulder shed light on the real Shane, a gifted athlete screaming for life direction and the chance to be in the spotlight.  Refusing to play by the rules, McConkey’s gregarious personality demanded... ...

#Winteriscoming

The doomsday arrival of endless darkness has finally descended upon us as we shift into the ‘the waiting period’ we currently linger in – at least on the Wet Coast. Snowshoes, skis, boards, skates and gear are all top of mind to all of us right about now and although we’re ready to rock the trails and the mountains…the snow has yet to ‘officially’ arrive.  You’ve already hit the pre-season clinics, the gear swaps, trained your body in pre –season bootcamps but still you wait. We all wait – for the green light that enough snow has finally landed to officially declare the new season a ‘go’.  The moment in time when we no longer wait and we can actually go play... ...
